Description: (1) For this great project I’ve created four illustrations which cover four articles delivered every week during November 2021. The first one, “Scientists count the career costs of COVID”, looks at the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the research community. The concept which inspired the illustration was the minesweeper game.
Description: (2) The second article, “Stagnating salaries present hurdles to career satisfaction” focusses on salary, job satisfaction and prospects, highlighting obstacles and difficulties scientists face to succeed in their careers. The concept which inspired the illustration was an impossible hurdles race ahead of scientists.
Description: (3) The third article, “How burnout and imposter syndrome blight scientific careers”, focuses on long hours/hard work experienced by many scientists which lead them to suffer health problems like burnout and imposter syndrome. The concept of this illustration was a broken gauge pressure.
Description: (4) The fourth illustration,” Discrimination still plagues science”, focuses on diversity in science. Nature survey reveals conflicting views on inclusion and equality. The concept for this illustration was a distinction between light and shadow regions in the image, between stairs and elevator, to reflect the differences in opportunities and facilities regarding the career paths in the research community.
